All about carpet

  • There are 3 main styles of carpet: Plush, Berber, and Frieze
  • There are 5 main fibers used for carpet: Olefin, Polyester, Nylon, Wool, and SmartStrand®

What is the difference between plush, berber and frieze?

Plush carpet is where the tufts are the same height and packed together. It is the softest carpet available and very versatile. Berber has loops that can be all the same or different sizes and is said to be the most durable carpet style. Frieze is thick like the plush but the fibers are twisted and many come with fleck or a darker color to help hide dirt.

What is the difference between olefin, polyester, nylon, wool, and SmartStrand®? difference between plush, berber and frieze?

Olefin works best in berber styles, is durable against abrasions, is easy to clean and more resistant to moisture and mildew. It is usually the most inexpensive fiber available. However, olefin can have a tendency to crush more so it just has to be in it's proper location. Polyester is durable against abrasions, easy to clean, and typically costs less than nylon and wool. Some styles are made from recycled plastic bottles, which is a great environmentally friendly perk. Polyester does not hold its fiber height under heavy traffic as well as other fibers. Nylon is the most popular fiber. It has consistent quality, durability and softness and can offer more colors than other fibers. Most stains can come out easily with your own spotter or a professional cleaner's services. Because of the nylons high quality, it tends to be on the higher end for price. SmartStrand® is exclusively Mohawk's fiber that was introduced in the last 10 years. It's the best of both worlds of nylon and polyester and is a polymer composition with superior durability and softness. SmartStrand®has a lifetime stain and soil resistance that is built into the fiber and doesn't wash off with cleaning. It is eco-friendly offering styles that are made with renewable resources like corn and is usually less expensive than nylon.

What is twist?

Twist is the number of turns put in the carpet fiber or yarn. Almost all carpets have twisted yarns. As a general rule, the more twist or turns on a fiber, the better performance you can expect. Yarns that are twisted tighter have a different "feel" than those that are less tight.

If I bend the carpet and see the backing does this mean the carpet is low quality?

No. All carpets, except woven carpets, are made with spaces between the tufts (ends). Remember, except for stairs, carpet is flat on the floor. You can feel the thickness or density of different carpets by sticking your fingers in the pile, but do it on a flat surface. As a general rule, thicker, tighter, denser carpets perform better.
